This 9-day journey gives you a well-rounded look at Portugal, with a mix of history, local food and time to explore. In Lisbon, a guided tour introduces the city’s key landmarks, followed by a hands-on pastel de nata class. In Évora, you’ll walk through Roman and medieval sites that seem to breathe history. In Óbidos, there’s time to explore the walled village and indulge in a tasting of traditional ginginha liqueur. Nazaré offers time by the coast, while Aveiro’s canals provide a different view of the country. In Porto, you’ll have time to explore the historic centre and enjoy the local food scene. The trip ends in the Douro Valley with a visit to Favaios, where a regional meal, music and local stories bring everything to a memorable close.

Travellers who will truly enjoy this type of tour prefer more physical activity for extended periods. Tours may include walking tours between 1–3 km, uneven terrain, steep inclines, climbing stairs (some without railings) and longer periods of standing.

Favaios Immersive Cultural & Culinary Experience
Spend time in the village of Favaios, where local traditions come to life through food, craft and community. You’ll be welcomed by the renowned bread baker of Salazar and learn the process behind baking traditional Portuguese bread in a rustic wood-fired oven. Continue with a visit led by a visionary local figure who has helped shape the village’s place in regional tourism. As you explore the museum and his quinta, you’ll hear the story of Favaios through his eyes. The experience concludes with an outstanding regional lunch accompanied by lively concertina music, offering a warm and memorable introduction to the culture of the Douro Valley.

Portugal and the Douro Valley
This 9-day curated journey connects Portugal’s heritage and cuisine, pairing Lisbon landmarks and medieval towns with regional food and drink.
Day 1
Depart Toronto or Winnipeg on your overnight flight to Lisbon.
Day 2
Lisbon – On arrival in Lisbon, meet your tour guide and transfer to your hotel. Your luggage will be stored until check-in is available. The rest of the day is yours to relax or head out and explore. This evening, meet your group for a welcome dinner. (D)
Day 3
Lisbon – Spend the morning in the Belém district on a panoramic tour of Lisbon’s key landmarks. See the Jerónimos Monastery, Belém Tower and the Padrão dos Descobrimentos. Stop to try a traditional Pastel de Belém before your afternoon hands-on pastel de nata pastry class. (B/S)
Day 4
Lisbon–Évora – Travel south to Évora, a UNESCO-listed city known for its well-preserved historic centre. Visit the Church of St. Francis, the cathedral and the Chapel of Bones. Continue to the Roman Temple. After free time for lunch, explore Évora at your own pace. Return to Lisbon in the late afternoon. (B)
Day 5
Nazaré – Leave Lisbon and stop in Óbidos for a tasting of ginginha, a traditional sour cherry liqueur, and time to walk through the walled medieval village. Continue to the fishing town of Nazaré before heading up to the Sítio for panoramic views, followed by a local dinner. (B/T/D)
Day 6
Porto – Travel to Porto with a stop in Aveiro, known for its canals and colourful moliceiro boats. Visit the historic train station, recognized for its decorative tilework, then take a short canal cruise. Continue to Porto. (B)
Day 7
Porto – Join a guided walking tour of Porto’s historic centre, including the Ribeira district along the Douro River. See landmarks such as Porto Cathedral, São Bento Station and Clérigos Tower. Remainder of the day at leisure. (B/S)
Day 8
Porto–Favaios – Travel into the Douro Valley for your Extraordinary Experience in Favaios to learn how traditional Portuguese bread is made. Visit a local museum and quinta, then enjoy a regional lunch with live concertina music. Return to Porto, with time at leisure before a farewell dinner overlooking the river. (B/L/D)
Day 9
Transfer to Porto Airport for your return flight to Toronto or Winnipeg. (B)

Extraordinary Explorations vacations are organized and booked by CAA Travel (South Central Ontario) Inc. and CAA Manitoba (“CAA Travel”) on behalf of CAA Club Group (o/a CAA South Central Ontario and CAA Manitoba). In the event of an increase in any of the cost factors, CAA Travel reserves the right to increase the price whereby the provisions of the Travel Industry Act shall prevail. Deposit is non-refundable at the time of booking. Final payment is due 120 days before departure. CAA Extraordinary Explorations packages are 100% non-refundable at final payment. CAA Travel service fee for cancellation prior to final payment varies by program. For full payment terms and conditions, please ask your CAA Travel Consultant. CAA Travel reserves the right to cancel or re-schedule any tour departure in accordance with operating requirements (minimum number of participants) or circumstances beyond its control. Please note: Participants must be able to embark and disembark cruise ships and coaches without assistance as well as have a good level of mobility for walking tours in destinations where stairs and traditional cobblestone streets can be challenging. International transportation vehicles and facilities may not meet accessibility standards.

Day 3
Lisbon
Spend the morning in the Belém district on a panoramic tour of Lisbon’s key landmarks. See the Jerónimos Monastery, Belém Tower and the Padrão dos Descobrimentos, all closely tied to Portugal’s Age of Discoveries. Stop to try a traditional Pastel de Belém before your afternoon hands-on pastry class. With guidance from a local chef, learn how to make pastel de nata, from shaping the pastry to preparing the custard filling. (B/S)
Day 4
Lisbon–Évora
Travel south to Évora, a UNESCO-listed city known for its well-preserved historic centre. Visit the Church of St. Francis, the cathedral and the Chapel of Bones, where thousands of human bones line the walls. Continue to the Roman Temple, one of the city’s most recognizable landmarks. After free time for lunch, explore Évora at your own pace, taking in its narrow streets and whitewashed buildings. Return to Lisbon in the late afternoon. (B)
Day 5
Nazaré
Leave Lisbon and stop in Óbidos for a tasting of ginginha, a traditional sour cherry liqueur, and time to walk through the walled medieval village. Continue to Nazaré, a coastal town known for its long sandy beach and fishing traditions. Spend time by the water before heading up to the Sítio for views over the town and Atlantic coastline. Enjoy dinner at a local restaurant this evening. (B/T/D)
Day 6
Porto
Travel to Porto with a stop in Aveiro, known for its canals and colourful moliceiro boats. Visit the historic train station, recognized for its decorative tilework, then take a short canal cruise for a different view of the city. Continue to Porto. (B)
Day 7
Porto
Join a guided walking tour of Porto’s historic centre, including the Ribeira district along the Douro River. See landmarks such as Porto Cathedral, São Bento Station and Clérigos Tower, along with several viewpoints across the city. Pause for a coffee and pastel de nata along the way. The rest of the day is free to explore or relax. (B/S)
Day 8
Porto–Favaios
Travel into the Douro Valley for your Extraordinary Experience in Favaios. Meet a local bread maker and learn how traditional Portuguese bread is made in a wood-fired oven. Continue with a visit to a local museum and quinta, where you’ll hear about the area from someone closely connected to its development. Enjoy a regional lunch with live concertina music. Return to Porto, with time at leisure before gathering for a farewell dinner overlooking the river. (B/L/D)
Day 9
After breakfast at the hotel, enjoy some final moments in Paris before your transfer to the airport before your return flight home. (B)
